Professor Hawking began Beta testing a prototype of NeuroSwitch™
in Cambridge
in November 2002. In March 2003, he arranged for the prototype to be
loaded onto his powered wheelchair, a high-tech mobile work station that
includes a custom-built Intel computer slab, telephony, flat
screen display and an audio system that broadcasts his trademark
synthesized voice. The installation was done during Prof. Hawking's
2003 lecture tour of the USA at the Department of Physics at Texas A&M

Prof. Hawking first learned he had the motor neurone disease ALS (Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis - Lou
Gehrig's disease) in 1963, when he was given only a few years to live.
It is a tribute to his invincible will and resolve that he has ignored
that prediction, and has for more than
